Meet the Artist: An Evening with Tim Bates
Thu, 05 Oct
|Katherine Richards Art Gallery
Tim Bates is a creator of minimalist lighting pieces derived from his fascination with architecture, theatre and empty space. He uses raw, unglazed clay enhanced with gold and sometimes graphite in brutalist designs to create atmospheric pieces that suggest shadows and mystery
Time & Location
05 Oct 2023, 19:00 – 21:00
Katherine Richards Art Gallery, 111 Portland Rd, Hove BN3 5DP, UK
About the event
Tim divides his time between teaching art at Brighton College and living in Brittany with his family. In both places he works with clay to create very different bodies of work. In France his work is making functional jugs, bowls plates, while in the UK it is more sculptural and architectural, usually taking the form of lighting pieces, each one unique, exploring various themes. They are quiet and understated, minimal in form and colour, but with a strong architectural presence
Tim is fascinated by theatre lighting, and his ‘brutalist’ design lamps are all about creating ambience and mood. These are not functional lighting pieces: some are enhanced with graphite, others gold, others a single shot of colour, to be glimpsed, dramatically, through an opening
During the evening, Tim will discuss this creative concept and demonstrate his process on an earthenware clay slab
